Master/Captain

It is the responsibility of all Masters to ensure compliance with policies and procedures, requirements, and documentation in the Companies Safety Management System Manual. Masters have the specific obligation to ensure that all personnel assigned to vessels are provided with information, instructions, and directions necessary for meeting the program objectives of safety, environmental protection, and quality service through knowledgeable and competent execution of assigned tasks.

Essential Job Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Supervise the crew, keep the vessel in operational readiness, and perform jobs as assigned. Train the crew to perform their duties in a safe, efficient, and cost-effective manner.
  • Direct maintenance on the vessel as needed.
  • Evaluate all crew members in accordance with Company policy and take action as necessary.
  • Responsible for ensuring that the Company’s policies are carried out.
  • Work closely with pilots and appropriate government agencies to ensure the proper performance of the job.
  • Ensure compliance with company safety policies, maintenance, and training programs.
  • Properly investigate and report marine incidents.

Minimum Requirements

  • Must possess and maintain a USCG Master of towing NCW.
  • TWIC, Radar Endorsement, and MMD.
  • 5 years as master on towing vessels, with 2 years on Z-Drive tugs.
  • Thorough knowledge of ship docking and navigational skills.
  • Working knowledge of propulsion, auxiliary, and deck machinery.
  • Must possess strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Must be able to work independently and without direct supervision.
  • Ability to work week on week off.
  • Able to work weekends, holidays, and at night. Willing to take callouts.
  • Valid state driver’s license.

Mate

  • Keep the vessel operationally ready and perform jobs as assigned.
  • Perform maintenance on the vessel as needed.

  • Responsible for ensuring the Company’s policies are carried out.
  • Work closely with pilots and appropriate government agencies.
  • Ensure compliance with company safety policies, maintenance, and training programs.

  • Ability to work week on/week off.

AB/Deckhand

Essential Job Responsibilities and Duties:

The Able Seaman (AB) is a non-officer member of the deck crew (deck rating position). The main duties and responsibilities of the AB include, but are not limited to:

  • Reports to the Captain and/or Mate.
  • Performs a variety of routine maintenance duties in order to preserve the painted surface of the tugs, such as chipping, cleaning, painting, and removing rust spots from the deck and sides of the ship using a hand or air-chipping hammer and wire brush.
  • Responsible for keeping the vessel in a clean, tidy condition.
  • Handles ropes and cables during mooring, berthing, and ship docking operations.
  • Overhauls and operates emergency and safety equipment such as life rafts and life raft gear.
  • Performs all operations connected with the launching of lifesaving equipment.
  • The AB may be a member of the ship's firefighting party.
  • Stands watch.
  • Participates in crew safety drills.

Marine Towing

Requirements

Chief Engineer

This position is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and upkeep of all vessel machinery, equipment, and operating systems such as main engines, generators, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, air systems, fueling transfer systems, steering gear systems and controls, alarm systems, refrigeration, piping systems, and deck machinery including winches and capstans. She/he is responsible for ensuring that the level of preventative maintenance performed is consistent with company-planned maintenance programs and manufacturers' recommendations.

Essential Job Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Take monthly lube oil samples for analysis. Performs repairs to engines, pumps, and machinery.
  • Maintains all deck machinery, steering gear, pumps, bearings, valves, electrical systems, sanitary systems, and piping systems. Checks the proper operations of engine room alarm systems.
  • Checks and maintains fuel/fluid levels in all tanks within the vessel.
  • Responsible for ensuring compliance with established fueling procedures.
  • Notify the Captain and Port Engineer of any abnormal changes in the status of machinery operation.
  • Tags and maintains the various systems values with the proper markings and color-coding.
  • Troubleshoot machinery malfunctions and perform necessary repairs.
  • Maintains vessel parts inventory levels.
  • Works on deck, including handling lines and towing gear.
  • Work with vendors and shipyard personnel during planned maintenance periods.
  • Other daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly maintenance.

Knowledge

  • 1 Clerical skills are needed to maintain accurate vessel records, including logs of daily activities, condition reports, inventories, and drafting work repair orders and parts requisitions.
  • 2 Proficiency in the use of a calculator is necessary for calculating factors necessary to determine fuel oil levels, drafts, and trim, and estimating flow rates.
  • 3 Proficient use of a computer, including Microsoft Windows and other applications.
  • 4 A high degree of mechanical aptitude is required. Strong knowledge of vessel machinery operation, maintenance, and repair requirements.
  • 5 Proficiency in math is required to make calculations to predict factors, such as taking measurements of fuel soundings and determining volumes.
  • 6 Must be able to read, speak, and understand English over the telephone and/or radio.

Job Conditions

  • 1 Frequent exposure to inclement weather.
  • 2 The noise level is high when working in the engine room. (Ear protection required).
  • 3 Ability to adapt to a variety of schedules and hours.
  • 4 Able to work weekends, holidays, and at night. Willing to take callouts.
